Conscious breathing.
Breathing is natural. Conscious breathing can be an intense and profound experience.
Breathwork is a simple, accessible practice that can support one’s experience of stress, energy and emotions. Most people can practise it without difficulty.
As with any practice that involves both body and mind, it is worth reading the following information carefully before you begin.
Listen to your body.
During a session, you may experience certain sensations — a tingling in the hands, slight dizziness, warmth or changes in your internal rhythm. These reactions are usually normal and part of the process.
If at any point something does not feel comfortable, you are free to slow down or stop the session. There is no specific outcome to achieve.
When active breathing should be avoided.
In the circumstances listed below, it is recommended that you do not practise active breathing techniques — but rather, where appropriate, follow the session passively and allow your breath to flow naturally, without forcing it. In these cases, the music and guided guidance can still promote relaxation and awareness.
- Cardiovascular diseases (e.g. cardiac arrhythmias, heart attacks, uncontrolled high blood pressure)
- Epilepsy or epileptic seizures
- severe respiratory conditions (e.g. COPD, emphysema, severe asthma)
- uncontrolled diabetes, aneurysms, severe osteoporosis, glaucoma, retinal detachment, severe tinnitus, hernias
- psychiatric disorders (e.g. psychoses, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, unstabilised PTSD, dissociative disorders)
- hospitalisation in psychiatric clinics, acute crises or suicide attempts in recent years
- Pregnancy
- recent surgical procedures
- Taking medication or substances that affect perception or the nervous system
This list is deliberately cautious and more restrictive than many breathwork practices. It is not a substitute for medical advice. If in doubt, always consult your doctor before taking part.
Practise safely.
Always practise in a safe, quiet environment where you will not be interrupted.
Please do not practise:
- whilst driving
- in water
- in potentially risky situations
- under the influence of alcohol or substances
The treatments involve moments of deep relaxation — a suitable setting is therefore important.
